Text Cleaner — Clean Text Online

A text cleaner strips the junk out of copied text: extra spaces, blank lines, HTML tags, URLs, and stray punctuation. This free text cleaner gives you nine toggleable options, cleans live as you type, and reports exactly how many characters were removed. Paste messy text above, tick the options you need, and copy out plain, tidy text.

Key takeaways

  • Nine cleaning options: extra spaces, empty lines, line-edge whitespace, line breaks, punctuation, numbers, special chars, HTML tags, URLs.
  • Options run in a fixed order — e.g. URLs are stripped before punctuation, which matters for the result.
  • "Remove punctuation" targets a fixed list (.,!?;:'"()[]{}); dashes, ellipses, and smart quotes survive it.
  • Live original/cleaned/removed character counts show exactly what changed.
  • Runs fully in your browser; your text never leaves your device.

What Is a Text Cleaner?

A text cleaner is an online tool that removes unwanted formatting and characters from text. Copy-paste from web pages, PDFs, Word documents, and emails often arrives with doubled spaces, blank lines, HTML tags, tracking URLs, and stray punctuation. A clean-text tool normalizes all of that into plain, consistent text you can safely paste into a CMS, code editor, spreadsheet, or AI prompt — without carrying hidden formatting along.

How This Text Cleaner Works

Tick any combination of the nine options; cleaning runs live on every keystroke, in this fixed order:

  1. Remove HTML tags — strips anything like <b> or <a href=...>, leaving the inner text.
  2. Remove URLs — deletes http:// and https:// links.
  3. Remove punctuation — deletes exactly these characters: . , ! ? ; : ' " ( ) [ ] { }.
  4. Remove numbers — deletes digits 0–9.
  5. Remove special chars — deletes everything that is not a letter, digit, or whitespace (line breaks are kept).
  6. Trim line whitespace — removes leading/trailing spaces on every line. (On by default.)
  7. Remove extra spaces — collapses runs of spaces/tabs into one. (On by default.)
  8. Remove empty lines — collapses blank lines into single line breaks. (On by default.)
  9. Remove all line breaks — joins everything into one line, collapsing whitespace. (Off by default.)

After all selected steps, the result is trimmed and shown with three counters: original characters, cleaned characters, and characters removed. Copy Cleaned Text copies the result to your clipboard.

Worked Example

Start with this messy paste (extra spaces, a bold tag, a URL, and a blank line):

  Visit <b>our site</b> at https://example.com — it costs $50!

  Call now...

With HTML tags + URLs enabled (plus the three default options), the output is:

Visit our site at — it costs $50!
Call now...

The tags and link are gone, the blank line collapsed, and edge spaces trimmed — while the em dash, dollar sign, and ellipsis survive, because none of the enabled options target them. Tick Remove punctuation as well and the ! and ... disappear too (the em dash still survives — it is not in the punctuation list).

How to Use This Text Cleaner

  1. Paste your messy text into the input box — the fastest way to clean up copied text from PDFs, web pages, and emails.
  2. Tick the options you need — the three whitespace options are on by default and fix most copy-paste mess.
  3. Watch the counters to confirm how many characters were removed.
  4. Copy Cleaned Text and paste the result wherever you need it.

Order of Operations Matters

Because the nine steps run in a fixed sequence, the same options in a different imagined order could give a different result. Two cases worth knowing:

  • URLs before punctuation: with both options on, https://example.com is deleted whole. With only "remove punctuation" on, the same URL degrades into https//examplecom — the : and . are stripped but the letters remain. If you want links gone, tick "Remove URLs".
  • Special chars before whitespace: "remove special chars" keeps line breaks, so enabling it together with "remove empty lines" still gives you clean paragraph structure — structure is normalized after symbols are stripped.

Rule of thumb: enable structural removals (HTML, URLs) first in your head, then character removals, then whitespace normalization — which is exactly the order the tool uses.

What "Remove Punctuation" Does Not Remove

The punctuation option targets a fixed, documented list: period, comma, exclamation, question mark, semicolon, colon, straight quotes, parentheses, square and curly brackets. Everything else survives:

  • Dashes and hyphens: -, –, —
  • Ellipsis … and smart quotes “ ”
  • Currency and math symbols: $, %, +, =, /
  • Underscores and other symbols outside the list

To strip those too, use Remove special chars, which deletes everything except letters, digits, and whitespace. Note it also removes accented characters and non-Latin scripts — it keeps A–Z only.

Limitations

  • Not a rich-text converter. Stripping HTML tags removes the markup but does not convert it (a <table> becomes run-together cell text, not a tidy list).
  • Cleaning is destructive. There is no undo after you copy the result out — keep the original tab open until you are sure.
  • "Remove special chars" is ASCII-centric: accented letters (é, ñ) and non-Latin scripts are deleted along with symbols.
  • URL removal needs http(s):// — bare domains like example.com without a scheme are left alone.
  • Punctuation removal also strips dots inside words (e.g. U.S.A → USA, decimals 3.14 → 314).

Text Cleaner vs Alternatives

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I remove formatting from copied text?

Paste the text into the cleaner and make sure the three default options are on: trim line whitespace, remove extra spaces, and remove empty lines. They fix the most common copy-paste mess instantly. Add 'Remove HTML tags' if you pasted from a web page.

How do I clean up text copied from a PDF?

PDF pastes usually suffer from broken line breaks and hyphenation. Run this text cleaner first for spacing and junk characters, then use the line break fixer in 'join broken lines' mode to repair the paragraph structure.

Does the text cleaner remove HTML tags?

Yes — tick 'Remove HTML tags' and anything matching <...> is stripped, leaving the inner text. Note it removes markup without converting it, so a table becomes run-together cell text.

Why did my URL turn into 'https//examplecom'?

That happens when 'Remove punctuation' runs without 'Remove URLs': the colons and dots are stripped but the letters remain. Tick 'Remove URLs' to delete links whole instead.

Can I remove all line breaks to make one paragraph?

Yes — tick 'Remove all line breaks'. Every line break becomes a space and the whole text collapses into a single line, with extra whitespace normalized.

Does this tool delete accented characters?

Only if you tick 'Remove special chars', which keeps A–Z letters, digits, and whitespace and deletes everything else — including é, ñ, and non-Latin scripts. The other options leave accented characters untouched.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Cleaning runs entirely in your browser. Your text is never sent to a server or stored.

What is the difference between 'remove extra spaces' and 'trim line whitespace'?

'Remove extra spaces' collapses multiple spaces or tabs between words into one. 'Trim line whitespace' removes spaces at the start and end of each line. Together they normalize both interior and edge spacing.

Can I undo cleaning?

There is no undo button — the input box keeps your original until you clear it, so keep that tab open until you have copied and verified the cleaned result.
