Remove duplicate lines from your text while keeping the original order

Duplicate lines creep into keyword lists, email lists, URL lists, and data exports — and cleaning them by hand is slow and error-prone. This free tool deletes duplicate lines in one click, keeps the first occurrence of each line in its original order, and reports exactly how many lines were removed. Paste your list above and de-duplicate it instantly.
Key takeaways
Removing duplicate lines means filtering a multi-line text so that each distinct line appears exactly once. A unique-lines filter compares every line against the ones already seen and drops repeats, leaving a clean list with no duplicates. Whether you call it delete duplicates, dedupe, or unique-line filtering, the job is the same. SEO specialists de-duplicate keyword lists, marketers de-duplicate email and URL lists, and developers de-duplicate log lines and data exports — anywhere repeats would skew counts or cause double-processing.
[IMAGE: Diagram showing a list with duplicate lines on the left and the deduplicated unique list on the right, with repeats crossed out — alt: "Duplicate lines removed from a list, keeping first occurrences in order"]The tool splits your text at every line break, then walks the lines once, keeping the first occurrence of each and discarding repeats. Four options control the details:
After processing, three counters appear: original lines (counted before any filtering, including blanks), unique lines, and duplicates removed. Copy Result copies the clean list.
Paste these 8 lines (note the casing differences, trailing space, and blanks):
Apple
apple
Banana
APPLE
Banana
Cherry
With the default options, the result is 3 unique lines:
Apple
Banana
Cherry
| Metric | Result |
|---|---|
| Original lines | 8 |
| Unique lines | 3 |
| Duplicates removed | 5 |
"apple " matched "Apple" (trimmed, case-insensitive) and "APPLE" matched too — the first occurrence's casing ("Apple") is what survives. The two blank lines were removed by the empty-line filter, which is why "removed" counts 5 rather than 4 pure duplicates.
The default (case-insensitive) is right when duplicates are a data-quality problem: keyword lists, email lists, and URL lists where "Apple" and "APPLE" mean the same thing. The first occurrence keeps its original casing, so your list's style is preserved.
Switch on case sensitive when casing carries meaning: programming identifiers (userId vs userid), case-sensitive SKUs, passwords, or file paths on Linux systems. In that mode only exact character-for-character matches are removed.
The optional sort uses JavaScript's default string ordering: characters are compared by code point, so all uppercase letters sort before all lowercase ones, and digits sort before letters. That means:
Banana comes before apple (uppercase B < lowercase a in code points)10 items comes before 2 items ("1" < "2" — it does not sort numerically)If you need human-friendly sorting (case-insensitive, numeric-aware), sort the de-duplicated result in a spreadsheet instead — the tool's job is de-duplication, and its sort is a convenience, not a full collation.
[IMAGE: Flowchart of the deduplication process: split lines, trim, compare case-insensitively, keep first occurrence — alt: "How the duplicate line remover processes a list step by step"]| Method | Best for | Order preserved? |
|---|---|---|
| This tool | Quick de-dup of any pasted list, no setup | Yes (default) |
| Excel / Sheets "Remove duplicates" | De-dup inside a spreadsheet with column control | Yes |
Command line sort -u | Huge files, scripted pipelines | No (sorts) |
| Text cleaner | Stripping junk characters before de-duplicating | N/A |
Cleaning pipeline tip: run messy pastes through the text cleaner first (strip HTML, normalize spaces), then de-duplicate here — invisible junk is a common reason "identical" lines fail to match. If blank lines rather than duplicates are the problem, the line break fixer removes empty lines without touching content, and the word counter verifies the final list length.
Paste your list into the box — one item per line — and click 'Remove Duplicates'. The tool keeps the first occurrence of each line in its original order and shows how many duplicates were removed.
Yes, by default. Unlike sort-based de-duplication, this tool preserves your original line order. Only tick 'Sort output' if you explicitly want the unique lines alphabetized.
Not by default: 'Apple' and 'APPLE' count as the same line, and the first occurrence's casing is kept. Enable the 'Case sensitive' checkbox to treat different casings as different lines.
Two lines are duplicates when they match after trimming leading/trailing whitespace (when that option is on) and case-folding (when case-insensitive). Interior spacing and punctuation must match exactly — 'a b' and 'a b' are different lines.
Not directly — the tool compares whole lines. First convert commas to line breaks (replace ',' with a newline in any editor), de-duplicate here, then join the lines back if needed.
Yes, by default the 'Remove empty lines' option drops blank lines from the output. Untick it if blank lines are meaningful separators in your list.
No hard limit — the tool handles thousands of lines in the browser. Extremely large pastes (hundreds of thousands of lines) may be slower; for those, a command-line tool like sort -u is faster.
No. De-duplication runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript. Your list never leaves your device.
The counter compares the raw pasted line count (including blanks) against unique lines. With 'Remove empty lines' on, blank lines count as removed too — that is usually the explanation.
